The Project
This project was inspired by Dr. Lance Trusty’s 1985 publication, The Calumet Region: A Master Bibliography. Recognizing that his work is now over four decades old, I chose not only to update the bibliography but also to make it web-based, allowing for ongoing revisions and additions. Unlike the original, which focused solely on Lake and Porter counties, this expanded bibliography now includes LaPorte, Starke, Jasper, and Newton counties. This approach is organic, evolving, and shaped by the community, reflecting the dynamic nature of the region itself. With its distinctive population, culture, geography, and location, the Calumet Region merits continued research and attention. This website aims to showcase the area’s rich history and support researchers in their work. Thank you for visiting.
The Calumet Region
Northwest Indiana, often referred to as "The Region", encompasses Lake, Porter, LaPorte, Newton, Jasper, and Starke counties. This area borders Lake Michigan and forms part of the Chicago metropolitan area, placing it within the Great Lakes Basin, which ultimately drains into the Atlantic Ocean. Much of Northwest Indiana lies along the south shore of Lake Michigan, earning it the nickname "South Shore." Historically, natural geographic barriers like the Kankakee Marsh isolated the Calumet Region from the rest of Indiana, making it the last portion of the state to be settled. Its unique population, culture, geography, and proximity to major waterways and urban centers make it a distinctive and research-worthy area.
